The Dangers of Winging It in Depositions

The Illnois trial practice blog has a post up about the dangers of winging it in depositions. It's a good point that (hopefully) goes without saying for most lawyers. Depositions are far too important to take lightly. While there's something to be said for developing a method and using it efficiently... that doesn't go so far as to render deposition prep worthless. An attorney I know says to use a rule of thumb of three hours prep for every one hour you expect in the deposition. Given that depositions are the primary source for cross examination at trial, how can you afford not to prepare as if it was the trial? More importantly, why even waste the time and money on a deposition if you're not going to get everything out of it?
