Over 1.78 million bankruptcies were filed in the last 12 months.  Less than 600 of those were filed involuntarily by creditors.   However, it’s a safe bet to say that none of those bankruptcies were filed under the circumstances surrounding the bankruptcy of North Carolina attorney John McCormick.

McCormick was last seen July 10, a few hours after one of his major clients sent a representative to McCormick's office in Chapel Hill to confront him over an overdue $802,000.  According to reports, McCormick stepped out a back exit and, except for a personal letter later found in his abandoned car, no one has heard from him since.

Now a number of clients and even McCormick's wife have instituted involuntary bankruptcy proceedings against the vanishing attorney.  At the same time, the North Carolina Bar has taken steps to freeze his client accounts and embezzlement charges are being investigated.  Amazingly, all of this has been done despite the fact that no one knows where McCormick is…
